Velingrad is located in one of the most picturesque part of The Rhodope Mountains - the Chepin valley. The legends tell that Orpheus lived in this region. Other tales say that the titanic strength of Spartacus (the rebellion leader of the Roman slaves) comes from these Rhodope lands.
With its diverse springs and wells, excellent climate and beautiful nature, Velingrad is one of Bulgaria's most popular spa towns. The average annual temperature is 9°C; and the average July temperature is 19° C. The winter is mild; the summer is not too hot and the autumn is warmer than the spring. The municipality boasts the largest number of sunny days per year in the country. The relative air humidity ranges from 65 to 75 per cent. Surrounded by age-old pine tree woods, the town favors abundant sunshine. This exclusively rare and valuable combination has a beneficial influence on the process of ionization (negative ions are prevailing) and are of definite therapeutic importance.

A miracle of nature is the largest Karst spring in Bulgaria - Kleptuza with a flow rate of 570 liters per second. These excellent nature assets make Velingrad one of the biggest balneological resorts in Bulgaria. There is great potential for the development of winter tourism and skiing.
The vicinities of Velingrad have breath-taking scenic beauty, such as magnificent coniferous and deciduous forests, spacious flower-sprinkled meadows and crystal-pure waters.
